Genius Illustrated

This is the second of three planned volumes, dedicated to Alex Toth. I was absolutely floored by the first volume and the follow up is equally remarkable. If you’re a fan of art/comics/animation you could do much worse than having these on your shelf.

I really took my time reading this. In an attempt to absorb as much as possible. Anxiously looking forward to the further two volumes on his life and work.

A trip to the National Gallery.

January 18th, 2011

This past weekend the family loaded up in my Father in Laws’ vehicle and we all headed up to D.C. to the National Gallery. Living within a 1-2 hour drive of Washington my entire life means I’ve been to the Smithsonian dozens of times. In fact I used to joke that the only place I ever went on field trips were Jamestown and D.C., (about 3/4 true if I’m honest). That said there always seems to be something new that floors me when I go.

This visit beyond seeing many favorites that I seek out each and every time I walk through the gallery. I ran across this pen and ink wash study by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This study is tucked away in the “Masters Drawings” section of the gallery. Alongside sketches and studies by a who’s who in art history.

This study for what I’m sure ended up a very classically realized painting, was easily my favorite new discovery in the gallery this trip. This is a drawing done by a man born 315 years ago. Hundreds of years and this drawing hasn’t lost a step.
