This is the piece I recently donated to the Art Auction done to help raise money to help one of my former professors a super talented illustrator and great guy, Kerry Talbot . (Click the link kids! There’s good stuff to see over there.)
Kerry was diagnosed with Brain Cancer on Christmas 2010. And has been fighting the good fight since. Not only against cancer but also having to land work while going through treatment. As fate would have it just prior to his diagnosis his staff position of over 20 years at the Richmond Times Dispatch (the city’s local newspaper) had been dissolved during reductions. Taking his health insurance with it. Which as you can imagine has left him in a position of having some serious bills.
This fund raiser and call to action was spearheaded by Patrick Godfrey. A really swell guy, and owner of one of the better comic shops I’ve ever walked in Velocity Comics.
And the equally awesome Ghostprint Gallery opened their doors for the event to take place in.
This past Monday all of Pat’s hard work bore fruit as a ton of folks came out in support. And from the sounds of it the auction was a definite success!
From what I understand it appears Kerry has his condition beat these days. And while I’m sure there’s a whole lot of fighting for him still as he works back to level footing. I sincerely hope what was raised will at least go some way towards making the climb a little less steep.
So long story short. Keep fighting Kerry!
Every now and again something comes along and reminds me that no matter how cynical I may be, people can be pretty amazing.
